Description
The map shows the potential permafrost distribution in Switzerland based on modelling. In Switzerland, above 2400 metres the ground can be permanently frozen, depending on its geographical orientation. This phenomenon is called permafrost. Due to global warming, the altitude of the permafrost line is likely to rise in the coming decades. This may trigger rockfalls, avalanches, landslides and mudslides in the mountains.
